Séminaire du Llacan – 15 novembre 2023‎ – Miracle OPPONG PEPRAH : « SOCIO-CULTURAL PRACTICES IN BURAK »

Abstract:

Burak is an endangered linguistic minority group situated in north-eastern Nigeria. The number of Burak speakers is unknown, however, the 2006 official census estimates a population of 20,196. Hausa is the language of wider communication within the community, while Burak is used in specific domains, notably in conversations among elders and during festive occasions like the Burak Day.

Burak has a wide array of interesting traditions and rituals and in my talk I will provide an overview of some of them, including marriage practices, the funeral ritual, the Burak day celebration and some taboos.

Burak culture encourages endogamous marriages. It is noteworthy to underscore that in the Burak community, women have the freedom to openly engage in relationships with multiple men prior to marriage. Divorce is permissible and can be initiated by either party. In the event of a husband’s death, it is expected that the brother of the widow will marry her.

Traditionally, funerals are not held for individuals who die before reaching the age of 50 years.

Among the various festivities in Burak, the Burak day celebration is the most esteemed. This annual event unites people from both far and near to commemorate life through the performance of customary dances and the promotion of unity. The snatching of young girls who are betrothed by potential suitors from neighboring villages is one of these events’ highlights.

The Burak people’s adherence to taboos is deeply intertwined with their religious beliefs. Specific examples of these taboos within the Burak culture include the banning of women from going to the shrine, prohibition of farming activities when there is a deceased individual nearby and the consumption of certain animals such as the revered banahene snake.

Communication de Lis KERR – vendredi 20 octobre à 10h : OV in Bantu: The syntax of Tunen

Le vendredi 20 octobre à 10h, nous accueillons Lis KERR pour une présentation intitulée : OV in Bantu: The syntax of Tunen.

Abstract:

The Tunen language of Cameroon is well-known in Bantu linguistics for its unusual syntactic property of OV word order, in contrast to the VO found across Bantu and common in Niger-Congo more broadly. This OV order of Tunen has previously been considered as an information structure (IS)-conditioned variant of a basic VO pattern, with (extra-)focality conditioning the placement of the object (see e.g. Mous 1997, Güldemann 2007).

In this talk, I present my PhD research on the interaction between syntax and information structure in Tunen, showing from field data that Tunen’s OV syntax is rigid and not conditioned synchronically by IS, nor by factors such as TAM, definiteness, and main versus embedded clause status. Instead, OV should be considered the pragmatically-neutral, unmarked word order. Focus may be left unmarked, and contrastive term focus on the object is preferentially expressed with a biclausal reverse pseudocleft rather than with a monoclausal VO construction. I provide arguments in favour of treating OV in Tunen as a recent innovation and present a formal model which derives Tunen’s OV syntax through a single change from an underlying VO structure. I conclude with some reflections on how OV syntax in Tunen relates to OV patterns found elsewhere in languages of West/Central Africa, specifically in terms of S-Aux-O-V-X patterns.

Séminaire du Llacan – 04 octobre 2023‎ – Michael Karani : « Argument Structure in Parakuyo Maasai »

The talk is about a morphosyntactic analysis of argument structure and valence change in Parakuyo Maasai. The study closely investigates affixes which affect the number of arguments in a clause. Different verbal affixes in Maasai alter the structure of arguments in a clause. First, the findings show that affixes which introduce arguments in Maasai are causative, instrumental applicatives and dative. Second, argument-reducing suffixes include impersonal, middle, reciprocal and antipassive. The findings further demonstrate that the valence-increasing affixes introduce agents or causers/causer events, instrumentals, beneficiaries and locatives. The verbal suffixes which reduce verb valence, for instance, anticausative and impersonal tend to suppress the agent/causer or causer event whereas reciprocals and antipassives reduce either the direct object of the verb or the oblique.
