TOWARDS PROTO-NIGER-CONGO: COMPARISON AND RECONSTRUCTION (2nd International Congress)

1st Call for Papers

We invite all colleagues working in the field of Niger-Congo comparative and historical linguistics to submit abstracts for the Congress. It is a follow-up to the 1st Congress held in Paris in September 2012.

The aim of the Congress is to forward the reconstruction of the proto-languages of the Niger-Congo constituent families and, eventually, of the Proto-Niger-Congo language. Data-based communications suggesting proto-language reconstructions (phonological, morphological, lexical, syntactical, semantic…) of various chronological levels or concrete steps toward such reconstructions are especially welcome.

Abstracts should not exceed 2 pages in length (A4 or letter-size), in 12 pt. font, with 1-inch/2.5 cm margins, including examples and references. The languages of the submissions and the presentations will be English or French.

The abstracts should be sent in a DOC or RTF format (if non-standard fonts are included, a PDF file should be send too) to vydrine@gmail.com.

We aim to finalize the selection on 1 March 2016, and we will contact all those who have sent abstracts as soon as the decisions have been made.

Taking into account the fact that results of a serious comparative work are hard to display in a two-page abstract, we invite colleagues to send their files containing comparative data for the posting on the site of the Niger-Congo Congress. It will facilitate the discussion among specialists during the months preceding the Congress and at the Congress.

Selected papers based on the communications will be published in the volume of proceedings in the series “Monographs on Comparative Niger-Congo” (Language Science Press).

The Organizing Committee will work on raising money to cover, fully or partially, travel and/or accommodation expenditures for at least some participants from emerging countries whose universities usually do not provide travel grants. Attribution of these subsidies will be selection-based. Those willing to apply for this subsidy should mention it explicitly.

Please distribute among interested friends and colleagues.
