The system of templatic morphology, as it is found in the Afro-Asiatic language family and particularly in the Semitic branch of the phylum, differs from the morphological system of Indo-European languages in that it is, to a large extent based on discontinuous morphemes. It consists primarily of an abstract consonantal root, which interdigitates with vowels and other prosodic patterns. The study of templatic morphology substantially influenced the development of theoretical morphology and phonology, and is gaining importance in comparative syntax and syntactic theory.
The Paris Workshop on Perspectives on Templatic Morphology approaches
root-and-pattern-based morphologies from theoretical, typological, and contact-linguistic
perspectives, aiming at the interdisciplinary dialogue between the different research
disciplines.
