Le séminaire technique du Llacan a repris sur les chapeaux de roues avec la très attendue intervention de Christian sur la segmentation dans Elan. En attendant une programmation à plus long terme, et pour aller plus loin, ce mercredi 27 octobre, nous aborderons les templates et s’il reste un peu de temps, nous prendrons les questions diverses sur Elan de façon informelle et interactive.

Le séminaire scientifique du Llacan reprend le mercredi 20 octobre de 10h à 11h en mode hybride.
Notre invité éthiopien, Girma Mengistu Desta (Assistant Professor, Addis Ababa University), nous parlera du ton en gamo, une langue omotique, pour solliciter vos commentaires sur ses analyses en cours.
Résumé de la présentation :
Gamo, an Omotic language spoken in southwestern Ethiopia, has been analyzed as having a tonal-accent system because a high pitch occurs in every word and has a culminative function (Hayward 1994). It is treated as a once-per-word and once-per-phrase element with predictable position of occurrence. Furthermore, the high pitch is considered as a an element introduced at the interface of phonology and syntax. In the present study, it is argued on the basis of empirical data that high pitch is not a once-per-word and per-phrase element. It may be multiply associated with more than one TBU in polysyllabic words. It may also occur twice in a phrase. Its treatment as a boundary tone with a culminative function is also not convincing because it contrasts paradigmatically with a low tone and makes a meaning distinction. Therefore, Gamo is better analyzed as having a ‘restricted tone system’.

Mercredi 28 avril de 10H à 11H, Lora LITVINOVA nous propose son intervention : « Preview of Kugama’s socio-cultural practices »
Résumé :
The Kugama ethnic group lives in a number of villages in the Mayo-Belwa and Fufore Local Government Areas of Adamawa State in Nigeria. The estimated number of Kugama or Wam speakers (glottocode: kuga1239) is to five thousand according to Ethnologue (in 1995, Lewis et al. 2016), yet this number is still to be verified. Some Kugama villages are difficult to access especially during the rainy season. For this and other reasons, their traditional form of living has been preserved, most important events being circumcision, weddings, and funeral rites.
Kugama’s basic social structure is clan-based. There are six traditional clans, two political leaders and one traditional chief. The Kugama are mostly farmers and hunters. Circumcision takes place every three years. It is well regarded and encouraged in their community. Traditional funerals are usually reserved for older members of the community while a modest solemnization is performed for others. The Wekuh festival is an important cultural event held in the town of Mayo-Belwa during the months of April or May. Three communities (Kugama, Gengle and Sate) come together to celebrate their traditions during this festival.
My data were collected in the town of Mayo-Belwa and several Kugama villages during 2017-2020.
