b) African language to French
i) On est foutu

Translation by Michel Lafon of the novel Asikho ndau bakithi by M.J. Mngadi from Zulu to French, 2014, Éditions Anibwe, 386 pp.

Tragic story of a Zulu family forced to immigrate to Durban in the 1980ies in order to survive. The shortage of housing, serviced by the segregationist government, makes them – like so many others – sublease a room in the township of Mlazi, where the conditions of life are relentless for the great majority of people. The family finds itself caught up in the violence of the black population. Things go from bad to worse, the family cracks eventually and, in their downfall, it drags along those who had helped and offered them shelter. On est foutu is a pessimistic novel which describes in a realistic way the situation of poor Africans in the bleak years of the civil war before the establishment of a democratic system in South Africa.
