Fula is a language with an immense geographical extension. It is spoken by about 30 million speakers across 18 African states from Mauritania to South Sudan. It belongs to the Atlantic language family (North Atlantic group). Pulaar (glottocode: pula1263) is the Fula variety spoken in northern Senegal, southern Mauritania and western Mali in the Foûta Tôro region. The written and oral literature of Pulaar is studied at LLACAN, among others in an ongoing research project, EcoSen, which investigates the links between literature and environment in a multidisciplinary perspective (literature, anthropology, geography and ethnomusicology). Fulfulde (glottocode: adam1253) is spoken as first language in Cameroon by about 700.000 speakers (no official sources) and by 10 million as second language or as lingua franca. At LLACAN, research on this Fula variety has resulted in publications on the lexicon, morphology, syntax and oral literature. Ongoing works are dedicated to lexicography, the edition of literary works (ELLAF) and material for the development.

Since LLACAN was founded, Fula has been the subject of several doctoral project in linguistics and literary studies: Marie LORIN (2015), Alpha Oumarou BA (2015), Melánie BOURLET (2009) on the Pulaar of Sénégal (glottocode: pula1263), Sandrine LONCKE (2002) on a Fula of Niger (glottocode: cent2018) and Jean-Charles HILAIRE (1995) on Fula in Nigeria (glottocode: nige1253).
